Mixed Doubles Member/Guest Tournament April 26-27, 2003
The Second Rainy Tournament of the Year, or the April Showers Mixed Doubles Tournament, or 2 for 2?

It finally took place two weeks after its originally scheduled date due to heavy rain both days. The re-scheduled date had rain (AGAIN?) and concurrent USTA matches to contend with as well, so we were forced to postpone start times by 4 hours. Rain in the AM hours and clogged drains at Rengstorff courts left floods of water for us to dry off. But undaunted the tennis players of MVTC saw what had to be done and set to work drying off the courts so that some match play and USTA could begin by 10am! Many others pitched in at the desk and at the food table. Special thanks to Madan for helping us plan the tournament TWICE, and for his congenial skill at the desk on both days, and to Gail, Mary, Tami, and company for also planning twice and providing all the breakfast, lunch, sandwiches and drinks we needed. Every MVTC player is commended for perseverance this month.

Division 1 (13 teams): Top seeds Howard Giles/Karen McNamara lived up to their top billing, defeating all opponents in straight sets and fending off a challenge in the final 2nd set by runners-up Steve/Lori Spray (6-2, 7-5). The Sprays outlasted 2 tough teams in 3-set matches from Dennis/Monika Olson and #2 Gary Cordell/Trinnique Low. The top half saw two 3-set friends contests: Wrubels vs Brodericks and Debbie Chyi/Tri Phan vs Teresa Low/Brent Wood. The consolation side was very competitive with Teresa/Brent the final victors vs Chris/Mary Dateo (5-7, 6-2, 6-4).

Division 2 (16 teams): Unseeded Bruce/Carol Overby seemed on their way to all straight sets victories until they met unseeded Shelli Johnson/Dean Nguyen in a thrilling high-quality well-played final by all and by all accounts. Bruce/Carol took the trophy (7-5, 5-7, 6-3). Fallen seeds and 5 matchup teams were another story in this division. The consolation trophy went to matchup team Bob Dickerson/Paulette Abt(Las Palmas) who won all their consolation matches in straight sets with the score in the final 6-2,6-4 over matchup team Steve Patent/Emily Williams(Cuesta). Honorable mention to matchup team Stu Stephens/Anne Wu(Las Palmas) for winning their first 2 matches before falling to the eventual winners.

Division 3 (9 teams): This division had 2 member/guest and 3 matchup teams.
Again top seeds lived up to expectation as Ray Uribes/Ginny Terndrup took the top prize in a great member/guest final match over Ben Calbo/Kelly Pope 7-5, 6-3. Honorable mention to Don/Huong Grey in a close-fought 3 set challenge to Ray/Ginny(3-6, 6-3, 6-4) in the semi-finals. On the consolation side, #2 seeds Liz Chambers/John Manton recovered from their first round loss to Calbo/Pope to win two straight-sets victories. Final score 6-1, 6-1 vs consolation runners-up Brooke/Rob Andrews.

Thanks to everyone for patience, encouragement, support, and bearing with the conditions. It couldn't possibly rain any more this year, on a tournament weekend......
