July Tournament Report
Patsy Duke
When we saw the names on the draw for the July tournament, we knew it
would be a sizzling tournament, but we didn't know even the court surfaces
would be too hot to touch! Some fell by the wayside, as defaults and withdrawals
were posted in every division, and breaks between games lengthened. So
those who achieved victory cherished the moment even more. So what happened?
Here's the run down:
The final round for Division 1 Women did not end until after 5
on Sunday afternoon, with Shelli Johnson and Myrna Irigon defeating Mary
Green and Nora Hayward (6-3, 6-1) to notch the most points in the round
robin. The top seeded teams in Women's Division 2 met, but it was
in the Consolation final as Eileen Pendley and Sherleen Ong edged out
Susan Runowicz-Smith and Debbie Ryan (6-1, 7-5) The Main Event featured
the last-minute team of Jennifer Taylor and Debbie Addicott dispatching
the rising stars Ashlee Bailey and Huong Grey (6-1, 6-1).
To the disappointment of the spectators, the Division I Men's final
was postponed until Wednesday after Howard Giles and Pete Torres had both
exhausted themselves in hard-fought semifinal matches. In that delayed
match, Pete emerged triumphant over Howard (6-1, 7-5). Meanwhile, the
longest match of the day was the Consolation final won by Suryan Stalin
over Todd Ngo (3-6, 6-2, 7-5). In Division II, Al Ovadia fought
his way through hotly-contested matches to prevail over Ed Velasco (7-5,
6-2), while the top seeds (again) fell out of contention and into Consolation,
where Dean Nguyen took the trophy from Kirby Drumm (2-6, 6-3, 6-1). In
Division III the top-seeded Bruce Overby was steamrolled by a talented
new member, Paul Anawalt, but went on to win the Consolation prize from
Blake Hughes in a highly-competitive 7-5, 7-5 match. Victory in the main
round belonged to Gary Cates over second-seeded Jan Nielsen (7-5, 6-1).
Special thanks go to Grier Graham and his 3.5 team who ran the draw party,
set up each day, manned the desk, and even carried in extra water as supplies
ran out. Food director Lynne Stark, unable to play due to injury, provided
essential nourishment and liquids all day to grateful players.
