Women's Singles / Men's Doubles June 21-22, 2003
June Tournament Report

With 94 entrants and the draws predicting great matchups in every event, the tournament had great promise. Well, the tournament lived up to its promise with no easy matches in any of the draws.

So what happened? Here's the run down:

Men's Doubles Division 1
The championship saw the #1 (Jeff Carleton and Everett Villasensor) and #2 (Mark Barron and Wayne Sorin) seeds go out in the first round. Duco Pasmooij and Guangyu Xu def. Carleton and Villasensor 6-3, 7-5 and Vincent Lui and Dave Wrubel def. Barron and Sorin 6-7, 6-4, 2-5 Ret. after Wayne had to default because of an injury.

In the Semifinals Huy Hathuc and Thai Nguyen had an impressive 3 set victory over Wrubel and Lui defeating them 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. But the highlight of this event was the Final with Duco and Guangyu vs. Charlie Pruess and Tony Serksnis. In a match that lasted 3 hours and 9 minutes it all came down to one point in the 3rd set tiebreaker. Duco and Guangyu outlasted Tony and Charlie 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (9).

In the Consolation side of the draw, the made up team of Paul Herbst and Tri Phan went all the way defeating Yuri Granik and Doug McIIwraith 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Women's Singles Div 1
#1 seeded Mary Dateo went all the way defeating Mary Green in the Final 6-2, 6-2. Mary defeated Gail Broderick the #2 seed 6-2, 6-4 to make it to the Final. In the Consolation side of the draw, Amy Cheng wore down all her opponents on the way to winning defeating Kathy Nichols in the final
6-4, 6-4.


Mens Doubles Div 2
Jeff Boeker and Roy Molseed the #1 seeds went all the way but it was not easy. They have tough matches all the way defeating Ara Hamamjian and Dave Roberts in the Quartersand Chris Dateo and Bruce Overby in the Semis. In the Final they defeated Bill Amaral and Ken Huynh 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Bill and Ken had an impressive tournament knocking off the second seeds George Koo and Tony Esfehani and very tough Castagner and Dove team along the way.

On the Consolation side, Esfehani and Koo defeated Lou Castellanos and Ed Valasco 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

Women's Singles Div 2
Unseeded Eileen Pendley breezed through the draw and clashed with the #2 seed Liz Chambers in the final. Eileen came away with an impressive win 7-6(1), 1-6, 6-4 in the final.

On the Consolation side, Sayuri Sharper was too much to handle winning the final against Carol
Kaplan 6-1, 6-1.


Men's Doubles Div 3
Noah Banks, after a 3 year absence due to a back injury, teamed up with Edgar Dijamco. In the Quarters they played a marathon match against veterans Tom Almedia and Butch Logan. After 2 1/2 hours and both teams exhausted, Butch and Tom triumphed 2-6, 7-6, 7-6.

The unseeded Indian Express, Ramakant Kulkarni and Venkat Narayanan proved too strong for the field winning in the Final versus Don Grey and Jeff Weckstein 7-5, 6-7, 6-3.

On the Consolation side, Noah Banks returned to his winning ways along with his partner Edgar after Keith DeSilva and Jimmy Duan retired due to injury after losing the first set 6-0. Welcome back Noah.
